Screw bolts, also known as irreversible screws, feature a specially design which can be tightened using a regular screwdriver. However, screw bolt cannot be undone due to the head design. The screw bolt is designed so that turning a screwdriver anti-clockwise will not work due to the sloping screw-head faces.

Why does screw bolts break?

Generally, screw bolts are not easy to break during use unless under special circumstances.

If the quality of the raw materials used in the screw bolts is not good and has a lot of magazines, it will result in insufficient hardness.

Excessive force applies to the screw bolts during use. Do a torque test first to check the minimum breaking force, and then adjust the torque. If high torque is required, screw bolts can be done with heat treatment.

There are process problems in the production of screw bolts, such as eccentric heads.

Check whether the pre-hole is suitable or not. If it is too small, the screw bolt will easily break when it enters.

How to remove screw bolts?

If screw bolts are easily removed, they wouldn’t be very secure. So, removal takes some effort.

There are a variety of screw bolts that each with different attributes and designs. The design allows them to be tightened with a regular screwdriver without loosening.

Use a special screw bolt removal tool. It will work with stainless steel screw bolts. You must use the correct sized tool that matches the size of the screw bolts. The tools feature two, super-hard tungsten carbide tips which can effectively dig into the screw bolt. By applying pressure via the removal tool, it’s possible to loosen the screw bolt.

Modify the screw bolt to create a screwdriver slot. It is possible to turn your screw bolt into a usable flathead one by carefully sawing a slot. This can be achieved using a small hacksaw or high-seed rotary tool. Then, use a screwdriver to remove.

Dig the teeth of the pliers into the screw bolt. This can provide enough pressure to loosen the screw bolt. Another option is to file two flat sides of the screw bolt, making it easier to achieve a firm grasp.

Why screw bolts need lubrication?

Lubricating screw bolts works that it reduces the amount of friction and driving torque, making the job easier on the screw bolt, the driver bit and the tool.

In order to prevent the screw bolts from rusting, they are ingeniously coated with lubricating oil. After the screw bolts are tightened, they have the characteristics of self-locking while the friction force decreases after being coated with lubricating oil.

However, we should lubricate screw bolts over an extended period of time lest they become rust. Some people may use soaps. Although they may work at the beginning, this old trick has a downside that the glycerin found in most soaps makes screws hygroscopic. It actually will draw moisture, which can prematurely rust screw bolts. We can use screw wax, beeswax or paraffin as alternatives.
